Island Nations Project The aim of the Island Nations project is quite simply to climb the highest peaks in each of the island countries in the world, a total of 51 island countries. All of the Island Nations within the continents of Europe and Africa have already been climbed - 15 countries in all - as part of the Europe and Africa projects. The aim is complete the remainder as soon as is practically possible. After climbing the highest mountains in Europe and most of Africa I needed another aim, another target to go for. After my heart attack whilst attempting Mount Everest I had to be realistic and say it would be very unlikely that I would be climbing mountains higher than 6,000 metres. Several peaks in both South America and Asia would be unattainable for me. What I could complete and still would be a sizeable objective would be the Island nations of the world. The 51 Island nations became my next small project to aim for, to research them and then climb them. The challenge is as varied as any other I have undertaken. From communist nations like Cuba to countries at war like Haiti, together with the newest country in the world, East Timor, this project would still prove interesting, if not quite as dangerous as some of the war-torn countries in Africa and elsewhere. Although I didn't feel quite the same challenge awaited me on this project, it was still a good objective and a good way to get near my goal of reaching as many of the highest peaks in every country in the world. Besides, there's just something about islands that draws you to them. |
